Abstract: A new route has been developed to synthesize substituted or non-substituted thiophthalic anhydrides, using sulphur as oxidizing agent. The route comprises the oxidation of (substituted) phthalide by elemental sulphur at high temperature and leads to (substituted) thiophthalic anhydrides in one step in 15-70% yield.
