An overview of the concept of provenance across various disciplines is followed by an analysis of the different facets related to provenance in databases. Two important models for exchanging provenance information, OPM and PROV, are discussed and compared with an emphasis on their temporal aspects. A reasoning tool for PROV instances is presented.
