Title: exhibition summer school seamless retail design
Contributors/Performers: QUARTIER, Katelijn
Issue Date: 2015
Abstract: Based on research that is happening around retail design at the UH, focussing on what a store should be and look like today, a summer school seamless retail design was organized for the past two years. The results of this international summer school where students from different disciplines (architecture, interior architecture, product design and marketing) and nationalities reflected on the store of the future were presented in an exhibition hosted by Unizo. Unizo traveled with 7 containers, showing the store of the future, trough Flanders. For the tree-day event in Hasselt, we were given the chance to show this exhibition.

Research Context: We feel a need for more knowledge and support in the business of retail design since times are tough for retailers today. A retailer needs to do more and invest more than ever to stay the store of preference for a consumer. Brick and mortar stores, as opposed to pure players, can and should invest in experience and service to appeal to the new consumer. Though retailers know they should change, they often do not know how. On the designer’s side, they are into designing experiential stores, though innovation remains scarce. Research undertaken within our research group focusses on how to create meaningful experiences including the human, digital and spatial factors. By having both academics and experts in the field working closely together with the students, the generated output is research founded.
