Today, more and more passenger cars are equiped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to assist drivers with their driving tasks. One of these systems is the Lane Keeping System (LKS). These driver aid systems operate within the scope of the Operational Design Domain (ODD), which specifies the conditions under which the driver aid system (or a component of it) is designed to function properly. However, drivers are unfamiliar with the limits of this ODD. A discrepancy between driver expectations about the ODD and the actual ODD limits might lead to potential traffic safety issues. This research is designed to explore the lower and upper limits of Lane Keeping Systems when driving in curves and to measure LKS performance to assess Lane Keeping capability when driving on a curve. A literature review and interviews were used to assess the information quality about the ODD. A Field Operational Test (FOT) was designed to test LKS performance in curves with different radii. Three SAE level 2 vehicles were used for testing. Results suggest that drivers are unlikely to be aware of the ODD limits of their LKS equipped vehicle. The FOT results suggest that ODD limits of LKS equiped cars are reached earlier than what would be desirable. Therefore, road design standards which are considered to be safe for manual driving might not be safe (enough) for automated driving.
