Research Context: Phonotype was developed by Walda Verbaenen in 2019 as a typographic master project at the international master course "Reading Type and Typography" at READSEARCH, PXL-MAD School of Arts in Hasselt, under the guidance of prof. Dr. Ann Bessemans. Walda Verbaenen designed this typographical project based on her interest in language and the importance of language in communication and integration. It tries to bring the phonology (sound) of a language into the textimage, and shows this way the visual identity of a language through typography. This project forms the basis of her PhD at READSEARCH PXL Mad School of Arts and University of Hasselt, started on 1/1/2020. This PhD, with title 'Phonobet - A new phonetic alphabet' handles the following research question: Can a new visual typographical system, representing the pronunciation of several languages, build a bridge in understanding language related phonemes and thus assists in reading aloud with the correct pronunciation?
