The influence of age on self-reported and clinical symptoms in BPPV

Abstract

Vertigo, headache and nausea were the three most prevalent symptoms in the four age subcategories. In the younger population (19-39y/o) neck pain and ringing in ears completed the top five of most prevalent symptoms, while in the older population (40+y/o) these were neck pain and disequilibrium. Overall, a negative correlation was found between the number of symptoms and increasing age. Additionally, a trend was detected, indicating that there might be more symptoms in group two (40-65y/o) compared to groups three and four (>65 y/o) but this difference was not (yet) discovered in this study. It must be noted that results should be interpreted with caution due to the lack of standardization of data acquisition, raising the need for further research.
