Title: INSTRUCCIONES (Capilla)
Contributors/Performers: SCHWARZ, Margaux
Issue Date: 2023
Abstract: INSTRUCCIONES (Capilla), a performance by Margaux Schwarz in which, departing from the suggestive architecture of the space, she reflects upon issues of transparency, intimacy and power. INSTRUCCIONES (Capilla) is a performance where a woman, equipped with a headset and earphones, creates a perimetral movement while repeating a pre-recorded voice flowing in her ears. While walking, she addresses a series of interactions with different people who are not presented to us, akin to a kind of training, which is in turns condescending, mothering or authoritarian when she’s not herself dominated. These instructions are all given in the name of an unspecified «We». Can the repetition of language, intensity and tone reveal invisibilized contracts between subjects, economies and social roles? Through this question, Schwarz interrogates whether it is possible to activate new interactions between a collective form of intimacy and social power–dynamics.

Research Context: The sound piece and performance 'INSTRUCCIONES (Capella)’ was firstly developed as a performance in the framework of 'BODIES OF EVIDENCE', a symposium on embodied knowledge jointly organized by RITCS School of Arts, Brussels Arts Platform, VUB, PXL-MAD School of Arts, UHasselt, ARIA (Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts) & Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel; an adaptation of this performance has also been shown as a sound installation in May 2022 at De Studio in the frame of Art Antwerp. As part of the research project ‘VOICE ROLES’, the script for this performance/sound piece blends language and interactions gathered from interviews or field recordings with sex workers and BDSM practitioners, or tips on how to make a perfect religious confession found online. These different forms of address, ranging from religious guidance to sex training to police interrogation have been collected, transcripted and then scripted and performed in order to explore issues related to voice and its performativity within specific professional or contractual interactions.
Impact Description: This exhibition just took place early March so I can't describe any outcome yet.
