Title: INSTRUCTIONS (Theater Space)
Contributors/Performers: SCHWARZ, Margaux
Issue Date: 2022
Abstract: INSTRUCTIONS (Theater Space) Performance Cast: Irina Jasnowski Pascual Script and direction: Margaux Schwarz @ Bodies of Evidence, Symposium on Embodied Knowledge in Artistic Research CCHA (Hasselt,BE) 2022 ‘INSTRUCTIONS (Theater Space)’ is a performance that takes place in a theater space. The performer, equipped with a headset and earphones, circulates in the audience and repeats - like a parrot - a pre-recorded voice that flows in her ears. Her voice is addressed to different people who are not visible and sometimes to the audience. Her interactions, which are akin to a kind of training, are in turns infantilizing, patronizing, mothering or authoritarian when she’s not herself dominated. These instructions are all given in the name of an unspecified «We».

Research Context: The performance 'INSTRUCTIONS (Theater Space) was developed in the framework of 'BODIES OF EVIDENCE', a symposium on embodied knowledge jointly organized by RITCS School of Arts, Brussels Arts Platform, VUB, PXL-MAD School of Arts, UHasselt, ARIA (Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts) & Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. As part of the research project ‘VOICE ROLES’, the script for this performance blends language and interactions gathered from interviews or field recordings with sex workers and BDSM practitioners, as well as from conversations with customs agents or youtube videos of horse training. These different forms of address, ranging from dressage to sex training to police interrogation have been collected, transcripted and then scripted and performed in order to explore issues related to voice and its performativity within specific professional or contractual interactions.
Impact Description: This performance has been shown in the frame of a sound piece in the frame of Art Antwerp at De Studio (Antwerp,BE) in May 2022. A variation of this performance has also been show at fluent art space (Santander, SP) in March 2023.
