This work further explores the form of literal traps and how they can be used as metaphors in art to speak of figurative traps. Referencing the visual language of a traditional foot trap from Cameroon I created a steel sculpture that is designed to be presented vertically and captivate visually.-

arts.review.researchContextThis project endeavors to expand the metaphor of the trap that has been dominated by negative connotations of guile and deceitfulness and violence. It strives to further the meaning of traps to include suggestion and invitation as opposed to only indoctrination. In this work I use the shape of a trap that would function by being hidden to make a sculpture that seeks to captivate visually. Exploiting classic compositional techniques, the work draws the viewer’s eye to the middle of the sculpture holding it at exactly the point which would normally capture the leg of an animal. The visual reference to a traditional functional trap highlights to the viewers that they are being baited without reducing the effect.-
