Title: Venus' flower basket
Contributors/Performers: MAGEE, Jesse
Issue Date: 2022
Abstract: In this work I explored the form and nature of traps. Referencing fishing weirs and finger-traps (children’s toy) I created a small steel trap as a sculptural object. Silver plating on the steel traps functions to increase the allure of the sculpture and thus increasing the viewers inclination to “fall into a trap”.

Research Context: This work explores traps as a metaphor for personal freedom. The object presented is clearly a cage, clearly is empty and very clearly has sharp edges that will hold on to your finger where you to put your finger into it. It can be agreed that it would be a poor choice to do so. Being free to make choices, however, includes the freedom to make poor choices. To purposely choose to do something that would generally be considered a bad choice and in opposition to accepted norms is to emphasize freedom of choice. This work investigates elements of seduction, human impulse control, and the relationship between traps and the body.
Impact Description: Venus' flower basket was shown at the exhibition Tresor in the Shiras Gallery in Valencia, ES. for a period of five weeks.
