Research Context: The work is about engagement rings that are sold on second-hand portals because, for example, the proposal failed, the partner died, or the relationship ended before the wedding. It is a memorial those contaminated objects. The work consists of 99 handmade cardboard boxes. Each of the boxes contains a sheet of paper with an advertisement text and a ring imprint embossed in the paper. The texts are based on sale ads for (used) engagement rings found in second-hand portals. None of the ad texts in the boxes existed exactly as shown. However, none of the sentences preserved in the texts is fictitious either. All texts are composed of fragments found in advertisements. The ring shapes embossed on the text sheets are inspired by rings also found in ads mentioned. However, the shapes have been simplified and partially enlarged. The imprints themselves represent the traces and memories that resonate even after the sale of the object. Within my research, the work falls into the category of objects that reflect on the relationship between jewellery, identity and memory. It is a visualiation of memory-related deviation and not based on it.
Impact Description: In April 2022 an early version of the work was shown during the a presentation at the Bodies of Evidence Symposium on Embodied Knowledge in Artistic Research at the CCH in Hasselt (BE). The final work was first displayed publicly during the open day at Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop (DE) in July 2023.
