Title: Soup Opera
Contributors/Performers: DE JONGE, Katinka
Issue Date: 2021
Abstract: ‘Soep Opera’ is not a theatre production, but an orchestrated improvisational exercise. Based on conversations with artistic hub de Koer and the theatre alliance K.A.K. (Koekelbergse Alliantie van Knutselaars), artists Renée Goethijn and Katinka de Jonge developed a script. HOwever, how it all plays out is determined by collective and individual choices. The audience takes the place of an imaginary collective and makes an important decision. There are several ways to make the decision and the outcome is always different. ‘Soep Opera’ is for anyone who wants to experience what it’s like to be part of a collective, or for collectives who want to experience what it’s like in another collective then their own.

Research Context: The Soup Opera arose from a question that actually had nothing to do with it. At the end of 2021 I was invited to replace someone in a project about failure, initiated by arts center VierNulVier and Rest For The Wicked vzw, an artistic organization led by Ewout D'Hoore. The project was called 'Failure Project Series' and wanted to investigate how we can speak and create from the concept of 'failure'. It was never entirely clear to me what the exact motivation was for initiating the project, but nevertheless I agreed, especially because the format of the work process they had set up appealed to me: two makers enter into a dialogue about what failure means for them, and create 'something' related to that. I didn't have more information, and I couldn't find other traces in my mailbox. I had clearly missed the beginning. As an artist I was connected to Renée Goethijn, a theater maker who is working as a solo director, but is also one of the founders of the artistic alliance KAK (de Koekelbergse Alliantie van Knutselaars). The question was whether we could delve deeper into the meaning of failure, specifically related to collectives and art organizations. At the time, I was involved as a temporary resident at De Koer, an artistic work and show place in Ghent, and in the context of this 'failure' project, I replaced someone who had been active within this organization for much longer. So I was a kind of delegate of an organization that I was still discovering myself.
