arts.review.researchContext | Mirrored Dwellers is a performative project that aims to explore virtual identity within the context of Extended Reality (XR). For this project, we experiment with digital adornment, embodiment, personification, user experience and intra-active (Barad) phygital impressions. A selection of Ornamutations (https://artificialintelligems.com/ornamutations-since-2021/) has been translated by Guus Vandeweerd into different avatars and a virtual world. During the performance, Ine Vanoeveren embodies an avatars and plays the flute in VR, all the while looking at her own reflection in this virtual world. Through Ine's viewpoint, an experimental poem co-authored with ChatGPT, and scientific allusions, the audience engages. Their presence and diverse perspectives are pivotal in questioning virtual identity, as well as active 'vs' passive spectatorship in XR. Wearing the avatar(s), entails embracing notions of otherness, plurality, and interconnectedness, while touching upon intricate entanglements of more-than-human actors, technologies, practices and environments. | - |
arts.review.impactDescription | Mirrored Dwellers originated within Anneleen Swillen's postdoctoral research and was subsequently expanded through collaborations with colleague-researcher Ine Vanoeveren and research interns (academic year 2022 - 2023) Guus Vandeweerd, Senneke Van de Wygaert, and Esther Verstreken. This ongoing artistic research project is characterized by dynamic collaborations and evolving configurations. To date, Mirrored Dwellers has been showcased at conferences held at RITCS, Brussels (23/03/2023), De Singel, Antwerp (19/04/2023), and PXL University College (11/12/2023). The project is scheduled to be presented at the 'AI Leap Day,' a collaborative event hosted by PXL and Corda Campus (https://www.cordacampus.com/event/ai-leap-day/). We have submitted the project for consideration at the Digital Festival 2024 organized by the London College of Fashion (UAL) (https://www.arts.ac.uk/students/stories/take-part-in-lcf-digital-festival-2024), which is currently temporarily postponed. Furthermore, this performative project has served as the foundation for an interview with Anneleen Swillen, Guus Vandeweerd, and Ine Vanoeveren in which they critically reflect on XR-performance, co-creative AI and phygital embodiment. This reflection, in turn, has been developed into a paper that we have submitted to the peer-reviewed International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media (currently under review). Looking ahead, we have plans for the continued development of this project, building upon its existing foundation and exploring new avenues of artistic expression and technological innovation. | - |
