Thick Timeline Modernist Housing Ensemble

Abstract

The txt document contains a link to 'Thick Timeline Modernist Housing Ensemble'. This link leads to an online document consisting of two animated timelines, which I refer to as ‘thick’ due to the extensive amount of information it contains. These timelines aim to provide a historical overview of the modernist housing ensemble and the undulating movement of the modern period. It also provides a comprehensive reference on modernist housing in Belgium and Europe, as well as noteworthy international projects and events. The timeline is set up in the Adobe application InDesign and consists of five pages. A small user manual appears first. Followed by the pre-and post-war extensive timelines. The last two sheets cover timelines of a larger selection of projects; respectively, Belgian case studies and International/European (housing) projects. Navigation within the online document is developed as intuitively as possible. To navigate to the previous or next page, click the grey arrows on the right and left of the screen. Zooming in and out or returning to the full screen happens via the toolbar at the bottom of the page. Toggles in the frames to the left of the timeline sheets can be switched on or off to show or hide the different topics/themes/articles. Above the line, you can find European conceptual and utopian ideas, as well as socio-economic and political events and iconic projects. Below the line, you can find socio-economic and political events specific to Belgium, Flemish government structures, and Belgian case studies. Also, ‘focus points’ represented by journal articles and topic-related themes are added. The published articles can be downloaded by clicking on the download icon. Furthermore, all images displayed possess a Creative Commons license or obtained copyrights. A list of image sources can be downloaded by clicking the button in the timelines’ right corner.
