Title: | Building Rings | Contributors/Performers: | BUSSCHE, Liesbet | Issue Date: | 2024 | Abstract: | Building Rings is a series of six rings sculpted from a variety of clay blocks. Clay blocks or non-decorative bricks [snelbouwstenen] are perforated bricks used in structural work. They have many advantages (less raw material, simpler manufacturing process, better thermal resistance), but they are not frost-resistant. As a result, they cannot be used for exterior walls and are thus normally never visible, although they occupy a significant place in the (Belgian and Dutch) built environment. Exploiting the ornamental potential hidden in this building material, I grind and sand the clay blocks with finger holes, making them more manageable for masons, into archetypal signet rings whose design and size are determined by the initial clay blocks. | Keywords: | materiality;jewellery;bricks | Document URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/1942/45583 | Link to publication/dataset: | https://www.liesbetbussche.com/objects_buildingrings.html | Discipline: | beeldende kunsten | Research Context: | Building Rings is part of my doctoral research in which I explore the materiality of the urban environment through interaction with seemingly solid and fixed objects such as bricks (see Liesbet Bussche, Brick by Brick, 2023) and clay blocks. | Impact Description: | Exhibited at various exhibitions, such as Visions, Ventures & Valuables (2024, Munich Jewellery Week, Munich, Germany) and From Burning Rice Fields to Urban Growth (2024/2025, De Vishal, Haarlem, The Netherlands), among others. | Related Info: | PXL-MAD School of Arts Hasselt Liesbet Bussche, Building Rings (Dust), 2024/2025 Liesbet Bussche, Brick by Brick, 2023 |
