Title: TTSA and CAMO studies
Contributors/Performers: GHEKIERE, Elias
Issue Date: 2023
Abstract: A series of images are generated by using ornament, abstract and abstracted shapes as the initial building blocks. Without specific references and leaning into improvisational methods, these paintings grow rather than being constructed. This result in different types of images, some bare, some full, but always in a state of becoming. These paintings enact a method of growth and transformation - becoming more specific as new elements are being introduced and new relations are established. This series illustrates how different materials affect the speed of creation and textural variety that comes with it. The paintings on PVC are slick, speedy and bare. Erasure is a large part of the construction process, resulting in pastel coloured painting wherein the reflective surface on which it is painted shimmers through.

Paintings on canvas are constructed in a slower rate- becoming an accumulation of uncountable layers. The matteness of the whole - with a variety of textures - betrays an affinity with post-impressionistic painting while exploring late Modern design methods. These camo-studies derive their name from their design principles ; baring close resemblances to vegetation, without being representative in figurative way. They explore the ambiguous region in which a composition undoes itself- flirting with the generic - subduing its own construction and intentions.

Research Context: These paintings are part of a larger project in which ornament is being explored as a gesture - a abstract movement that holds the capacity to extend from the detail to affect the formation of larger wholes. This specific project functions in tandem with the production of ceramic objects. Both projects explore the picturesque- as a methodology - not as a representational project. (Which is another branch of paintings and photographs)
