Title: Drawings / designs PTI -23-25
Contributors/Performers: GHEKIERE, Elias
Issue Date: 2023
Abstract: Drawings on paper with various techniques.
These function either as autonomous drawings or designs to be used within other mediums such as glass, sculpture, painting, installations.

The fluent, fluid, calligraphic line is often the constitutive element for larger compositions.
This allows for the transposition on fluidity in materials that are inherently more rigid, but also to compose a language that is hybrid, combining imagery from various places and times in art history.

Research Context: Drawing is a very direct method of trace making with very limited resistance of the medium itself.
Therefore, drawing invites a deeper exploration of the concept of ‘gesture’ as the initial movement or instigator of ornament. These often ephemeral drawings can be easily reproduced and reiterated - making this practice oriented at the ‘designing’ stage of objects and images, since interaction with physical material (and their individual resistance) is minimal. The drawing process and output is set in contrast with the sculptural output of this PhD research. In the sculptural practice, concepts such as gesture, skin and the picturesque are being explored in materials with larger technical barriers - which inform the formation of objects beyond design issues. Aside from forming a contrast, the drawings also help to translate the gestural feelings into objects - by using designs that were created free from those very technical challenges.
