Abstract: In the latest iteration of our ongoing Artificial Intelligems Ornamisms project, Greg Scheirlinckx and Anneleen Swillen are bringing newly co-created videos into dialogue with a selection of objects, including an antique ivory necklace, a children's textbook, and dental items. While these objects may seem worlds apart at first glance, they share deeper sociopolitical, material, ethical, and cultural concerns. They invite us to reflect on the meaning of (re)turning to “the roots”, and consider processes of collection, extraction, and exploitation, along with ways of treatment, in an age of AI. What possible interconnections, and confrontations, arise from these objectquestions? What realities are uncovered, or constructed, through these phygital constellations? When we listen carefully, what do the shouts whisper, and what dirt gathers in the cornered silence? And, who are we to speak, or bite our tongue?

Research Context: I co-founded Artificial Intelligems during my postdoctoral research at PXL-MAD School of Arts and the University of Hasselt (2020 - 2025) and continue working with and around it in my research. Artificial Intelligems is an experimental, fluid and interdisciplinary collective exploring more-than-human co-creation. Through participatory projects, we research the possibilities, roles, impact, and risks of working with AI in contemporary jewellery. By speculating about futures adornment, we expand discussions on phygital embodiment, material intelligence, and co-authorship—positioning jewellery as sites for more-than-human encounters, (re-)imagination, entangled agency, and learning in a post-digital culture. For our second project, following Ornamutations, we launched an open call to collect close-up images of jewellery on human skin. With contributions from 96 participants worldwide, they developed a diverse dataset. This became the foundation for training a machine learning algorithm to co-create Ornamisms—entangled bodies e-merging, envisioning more-than-human interconnections, flowing between supposedly organic and synthetic. From this process, co-founder Greg Scheirlinckx and I, Anneleen Swillen, created eight audiovisual pieces to be shown and worn via smartphones. Wearable films, jewellery continuously becoming, as an act of adornment. The sound design, composed by Scheirlinckx, interacts with the visuals, creating an interplay between image and sound. By engaging with fundamental concepts of jewellery—such as wearability and materiality—this research does not seek to overturn traditional craft values and skills. Instead, by exploring novel approaches, Artificial Intelligems investigates what AI can offer the jewellery field in terms of creative opportunities while remaining critically aware of the ethical, ecological and political challenges it presents. At the same time, we explore how jewellery—with its attention to detail, material sensitivity, and embodied interactions—can, in turn, inform and enrich the development of AI. "Ornamisms (Root(s), Connection <> Extraction, Treatment)" is a new experimental iteration of my ongoing research into the intersection of jewellery, AI, and the more-than-human.
