Abstract: This paper presents the modelling methodology of a discrete event simulation model for intermodal barge transport. An intermodal freight transport network is modelled with the objective to understand the system and analyse various network configurations. Intermodal transport networks exhibit an increased complexity due to the inclusion of multiple transport modes, multiple decision makers and multiple types of loading units. Because of this increased complexity and the required level of detail, discrete event simulation is the appropriate tool of analysis. The conceptual and computerized modelling process is described and an application involving the simulation of alternative bundling networks is presented.
