Abstract: In this paper we propose a hybrid, trusted and secure DSR-S* protocol with Intrusion Detection System (IDS) as a Network-Layer Security solution to mitigate selective packet dropping by Byzantine nodes in Mobile ad hoc Networks (MANETs). This is a hybrid security solution that assumes no a priori trust between network nodes and makes use of both first-line preventative mechanisms like intrusion detection and reaction systems. Our approach adopts a distributed-probing technique, in which each participating network node carries a valid token that should be renewed before it expires by its one-hop neighbours, which collaboratively monitors it for any possible misbehaviour in packet routing and forwarding services. This should guarantee effective and efficient packet routing and overall MANET security.
