Vanuit Pools perspectief

Abstract

Het voorbije decennium is het aantal Polen dat in Vlaanderen en België is komen wonen sterk toegenomen. Vooral sinds de toetreding van Polen tot de Europese Unie (2004), de daaropvolgende versoepeling van de arbeidsvoorwaarden (2006) en vrijmaking van de arbeidsmarkt (2009) tekenden de bevolkingsstatistieken een sterke stijging op van het aantal Polen. In Vlaanderen is de Poolse gemeenschap intussen de derde grootste geregistreerde bevolkingsgroep van buiten de EU15. In dit rapport schetsten we een uitgebreid profiel van de (geregistreerde) bevolking van Poolse afkomst in de stad Antwerpen, de belangrijkste aantrekkingspool van Poolse migranten in Vlaanderen. Aan de hand van data van een representatieve face-to-face bevraging van ruim 400 personen van Poolse afkomst tussen 18 en 70 jaar oud (Survey Poolse Gemeenschap 2010) focuste deze bijdrage op verschillende thema’s (migratie, taalbeheersing en taalgebruik, sociale contacten, transnationale activiteiten, identiteitsbeleving, geloof en waardeoriëntaties, beeldvorming, discriminatie-ervaringen en vertrouwen).

ENGLISH/ In the past decade, the number of Poles living in Flanders, and in Belgium, has increased rapidly. Population statistics have shown a particularly strong growth in the number of Poles since Poland’s accession to the European Union (2004), the subsequent easing of employment restrictions (2006) and the liberalization of the employment market (2009). In Flanders the Polish community is now the third largest registered population group from outside the EU15. This report sketched a detailed profile of the (registered) population of Polish descent in the city of Antwerp, the main centre drawing Polish immigration to Flanders. This study used data from a representative face-to-face survey of over 400 people of Polish descent aged between 18 and 70 (Survey Poolse Gemeenschap 2010) to focus on various themes (migration, language proficiency and use, social contacts, transnational activities, sense of identity, faith and values, the attitude towards different ethnic-cultural groups, experiences of discrimination, and trust).
