After an explanation of bodily experiences and their neurochemical and physiological backgrounds, our focus shifts to movements of hands and fingers influenced by emotions, to be found in the well-known 11th century manuscript "Hebban olla uogala". Analysing this oldest handwritten Flemish poem by comparison to standard orthography and with the help of letter frequencies did not reveal irregularities caused by emotion. The phrase, meant to be a pen test, should therefore be considered as half a pangram. Emotional factors could nevertheless have been present. Gregorian chant notation in the upper corner of the manuscript suggests that the poem was accompanied by a melody, possibly within some choral setting. The emotional benefits of choral singing are finally considered.-
The authors would like to thank Nathalie Theunissen and Stefanie Van Mierloo, MSc Students of Medicine, as well as Jirka Cops and Yörg Dillen, BSc Students of Biomedical Sciences, for their kind interest during the preparation of this study. Hippus Handshoemouse® and Musica Sacra Tongeren are thanked for their long-standing endorsement. This study was initiated and performed by Chamber Choir De Kleine Cantorij NPO, Tongeren, Belgium, on the occasion of a 2006 project kick-off meeting on The Chant of the Secular Clergy in the Low Countries: Music and Liturgy at the Collegiate Church in Tongeren. It was performed under the auspices of the “Cultuurraad Tongeren”. Several elements had been discussed during the annual Summer Course of Dutch Language and Culture of the University of Hasselt Belgium, organised by Prof. dr. Jos Wilmots.-
