Optimizing train planning in intermodal rail transportation: Explorative case study and future research directions

Abstract

The train load planning problem involves the assignment of outbound load units to a location on a train. Optimization of this planning task can support train planners in their decision-making process by making cost-efficient and time-saving decisions. In this paper interesting research directions are identified from current literature on train load planning in intermodal rail transportation from the perspective of an intermodal rail operator managing his own trains. They are complemented with and confirmed by an explorative real-world case study of a company located in Flanders (Belgium) and the Netherlands.
