The Smell Of War: a contemporary art exhibition about the smell of war

Abstract

International artists from the present day demonstrate that scent can really be context and /or concept of the work. Scents evoke memories and so also emotions and associations, but let the beholder also re-think and reflect about the context of the work. With the support of Stijn Maes and Annemie Morisse.

The main focus of the exhibition publication lies on the olfactory artworks about gas attacks and chemical wars, as well as on the not-smelling aspect by protection of gas masks.

Hoe ruikt een oorlog? Ervaar de geur van angst, triomf, dood, modder en buskruit, ... Geuren zijn de meest directe manier om het zintuiglijke verhaal van de oorlog op te roepen. Curator Peter de Cupere geeft samen met international olfactorische kunstenaars context aan dit verhaal. Met de steun van Stijn Maes en Annemie Morisse.
