Title: Touch of Steel
Contributors/Performers: HUYCKE, David
Issue Date: 2014
Abstract: 'A Touch of Steel' is the result of the 2014 Steel Prize competition organised by the German Kolloquium Nordrhein-Westfalen together with the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen, Jewellery Design Department. The exhibition will showcase how the 22 selected students work with the medium of steel in a particularly refreshing and pioneering way. They are accompanied by 27 German and Belgian designers and artists who regularly work in the medium of steel. They not only push the limits of the material, they also produce works which are the embodiment of pure craftsmanship. Curators are Nedda El-Asmar and Marc Ribbens. Traveling exhibition: Klingen Museum Solingen 24/5/2014-31/8/2014, Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus Hanau 25/9/2014-25/1/2015, Galerie Design Vlaanderen Brussel 21/5/2015-23/8/2015, Reciprocity Luik 1/10/2015-1/11/2015. Participating artists: Sawa Aso, Sophie Baumgärtner, Veronika Blazickova, Velislava Bozhinova, Hilde De Decker, Kaat De Groef, Martina Dempf, Laura Derouf, Eline De Winter, Camille El-Achkar, Nedda El-Asmar, Beate Eismann, Silke Fleischer, Emmanuel Gardin, Caroline Geerardyn, Luise Herb, Herman Hermsen, Patrick Hoet, Elisabeth Holder, David Huycke, Dabin Lee, Shu Liang, Yijun Liu, Orsolya Losonczy, Xavier Lust, Elitsa Macheva, Friederike Maltz, Shahrzad Motallebi, Paul Müller, Jorge Manilla Navarrete, Renato Nicolodi, Nina Pouillon, Veronika Schmalz, Gisbert Stach, Lucile Soufflet, Dimitar Stankov, Tom Stöckl, Camiel Van Breedam, Antoine Van Loocke, Koen Vanmechelen, Louisa Vannevel, Vincent Verstrepen, Daniel Von Weinberger, Fan Wang, Andrea Wippermann. Research Context: 1/ Participation in exhibition during ZAP mandate Universiteit Hasselt 2/ For this exhibition the object 'Fractal Chaos' (2012) was send in. This object is a further development within the research towards the expressive potential of traditional techniques and media, more specific the contemporary relevance of granulation, considered one of the most magical ornamental techniques in the history of goldsmithing. (cf. doctoral thesis 'Huycke, D., 2010, The Metamorphic Ornament: Re-Thinking Granulation. Een onderzoek naar de transformatiemogelijkheden van granulatie naar sculpturaal zilverwerk. Doctoraat in de Beeldende Kunst, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Universiteit Hasselt, 2005-2010 (defense 24/09/2010, Z33 Hasselt)) Rather than the actual technique of granulation itself, which is the starting point and source of inspiration, the main content of research is the process of transformation, whereby techniques and concepts from one discipline, the art of goldsmithing are implemented in another discipline, sculptural silversmithing. Since the moment of its conception granulation has been found in jewelry as a surface application and has rarely been used for structural purposes. From this knowledge the first point of departure emerged, which explores the possibilities of structural granulation in sculptural silverwork. From this perspective the granule - the original ornament - loses its primary, decorative function of pure visual pleasure and shifts into the essential building material of the object. Granulation becomes the texture, the structure as well as the architectural support of the work. Alongside this rather technical inquiry, a second, more conceptual starting point arose in which the expressive potential of granulation was explored. In this context granulation evolves from a decorative or constructive technique into subject matter and concept, reaching beyond the technical applications of the process towards a more poetic dimension. The use of a mould very often indicates that the outline and outside shape of an object is more or less decided in advance. In this case the whole comes before the single parts, which inscribe themselves and adapt to the shape of the whole. On the other hand there is the method where the outside form is not decided in advance, but where the form of the object is the result of the summation of the parts. Within the frame of this additive method Fractal Chaos was developed. The construction started from a very simple, geometric way of stacking, based on the geometry of the tetrahedron, and it is intriguing to see how this can result in such a complex and apparent chaotic structure. In other words Fractal Chaos has not been designed, instead it grew from a direct dialogue between head and hand, according to the ‘DNA’ of the combination of the building method, the building geometry and the building element.
