Abstract

Les représentations d'animaux sont un élément essentiel de l'iconographie prédynastique. La chasse aux animaux sauvages est très importante comme expression du pouvoir et du concept du maintien de l'ordre sur le chaos. De plus, des animaux comme le taureau et le faucon peuvent être des symboles de pouvoir. Les fouilles récentes d'Hiérankonpolis confirment l'importance des animaux sauvages dans la réalité. Finalement, les animaux "hybrides" ou "mythologiques" sont un aspect intéressant mais difficile à comprendre du symbolisme animalier.

Animal representations are an essential part of Predynastic iconography. Of great importance is hunting wild animals as expression of social power and concept of maintenance of order over chaos. Furthermore, animals can be symbols of power, as is the case for the bull and the falcon. Recent excavations at Hierakonpolis confirm the importance of wild animals in the reality. Finally, “hybrid” or “mythological” animals are an interesting but difficult to understand aspect of animal symbolism.
