Experiments have been performed to clarify the polymerisation mechanism of chloromethyl-4-(n-butylsulfinyl)methylbenzene 1a and 4-chloromethyl-4'-(n-butylsuIfinyl)methylbiphenyl Ib in NMP. Addition of TEMPO and water to the polymerisation mixture led to the conclusion that radical as well as anionic mechanisms occur which lead to the formation of a high and a low molecular weight polymer fraction, respectively.
