This study critically reviews 28 articles on dividend decisions in family businesses, published between 2000 and 2018 in 26 finance and management journals. Based on a comprehensive analysis, we give an overview of the current state in family business literature structuring theoretical thinking on dividend decisions. In addition, we offer a research agenda for the future, containing several suggestions on research questions, theoretical integration, sampling and study design. This way, we articulate and spotlight areas where family business scholars may most fruitfully direct their attention, which will in turn advance our knowledge of dividend decisions in family businesses.-
