Abstract: This paper presents different types of two-way and four-way nominally pinned as well as moment resisting open-to-CHS connection configurations obtained via an innovative “passing-through” approach and primarily proposed through the European research project LASTEICON. The two-way moment resisting connections are emphasized in this article. The nonlinear behaviour of the connections is discussed through a suitable understanding of the force-transfer mechanism involved. Furthermore, these innovative connections are compared with the directly welded conventional open-to-CHS connections to highlight the advantages offered by the “passing-through” approach.
