Abstract: A new synthetic route to high molecular weight poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivatives-via a p-quinodimethane intermediate-has been investigated. Whether the polymerization is ionic or free radical has been under discussion for a long time. Strong indications for a self-initiating free radical mechanism for the polymerization are presented.
