Abstract: Ti2N coatings are very interesting for corrosion and wear-resistance applications. It seems, however, that their introduction in industry has failed owing to insufficient reproducibility and scale-up problems. In this paper, a number of deposition experiments are described in which the evaporation ion plating technique was used to study the influence of the Ti evaporation rate and the deposition temperature on the properties of the coating. Adhesion, thickness, hardness, structure and phase composition were determined. Only in a narrow deposition region and with strictly controlled parameters could a reproducible Ti2N coating be deposited.
