Abstract: This paper describes in full detail an analysis of two expert system shells: Level 5 Object and Kappa PC. The major components of these tools (knowledge representation, inference and control, developer interface, user interface and explanation facility, interface to external data sources, support and documentation) were studied and tested by means of small prototypes. Results and experiences of this work are given together with some software engineering remarks.
