Title: | Structural and chemical analysis of thin-film solar cell materials: an atom probe tomography study | Authors: | RIVAS RIVAS, Nicolas | Advisors: | Renner, Frank Uwe Cojocaru-Mirédin, Oana |
Issue Date: | 2021 | Abstract: | Atom probe tomography (APT) is a technique that allows the characterization of a
material at the 3-D nanoscale with single atom sensitivity. The uniqueness of APT
lies in its ability to determine physical nano-structures, and correlate them to
compositional information with high sensitivity (≤ 50 appm). Compared to
conventional electron microscopes that magnify via manipulating radiation paths,
the APT applies high frequency laser and a highly curved electric field to remove
ions from a specimen surface and accelerate them towards a detector. Afterwards
events that occurred during the measurement can be reconstructed to acquire
sufficient magnification and a detailed 3-D representation of a specific region of
interest. Coupling of this magnification method with time-of-flight mass
spectrometry, ions evaporated from the sample surface by the electric field will
be identified by their mass-to-charge ratio. For these reasons, APT is the only tool
available that successfully quantifies and identifies isotopic information at these
sub-nanometer scales. Moreover, due to the flexibility of APT in analyzing a wide
range of materials and the availability of state-of-the-art sample preparation
techniques, chemical and structural analysis of advanced and sensitive materials
for various applications becomes increasingly possible.
In this regard, APT was applied in this work to address the nanostructure of
emerging high efficiency organo-metal halide perovskites and CIGS based solar
cells materials. The interest of studying these materials is related to the fact that
in only a short period of time these thin film solar cell devices have achieved or
even surpassed the output efficiencies of conventional solar cell materials that
have been studied for over 40 years. In particular, perovskite based solar cell
devices possess the desirable combination of nature abundant raw materials and
cost-effective processing techniques. This, in addition with a tunable band gap
and the flexibility of producing new solar cell architectures, facilitates tandem
applications conjunctly with other cells which could lead to ever increasing record
output efficiencies. Nevertheless, some key challenges such as their toxicity and
long-term stability to the circumambient atmosphere remain to be resolved before
their large-scale deployment. Hence, the intent of this work is to facilitate the
usage of APT for analyzing photovoltaic perovskites by increasing the applicability
horizon of the technique towards nano-characterization of sensitive organic-inorganic material systems. It was found that sample preparation with focused ion
beam (FIB) under cryogenic temperatures was required in order to prevent halide
loss (I,Br) as measured by APT. Additionally, the overall stability of the hybrid
perovskite specimen during field evaporation was improved. Results also indicate
that elements such as Rb in highly efficient multiple cation perovskites segregate
to form separate phases which may hinder the performance of the device in the
long term.
In the particular case of CIGS based solar cells, as one of the leading technologies
in thin-film solar power production, these devices have been extensively studied
in order to enhance the output efficiency of the cell with the aim of reaching its
theoretical efficiency value of 30%. To this end, alkali doping with sodium and
potassium is a well-known employed process that improves the efficiency of CIGS
solar cell devices in the short term. However, it has also been shown that the
presence of alkali in the CIGS absorber layer may lead to deterioration in solar
cell output efficiency after long term operation. Therefore, this work investigated
the role of alkali in the overall reduction of device efficiency. For this study, CIGS
samples with and without alkali were subjected to aggressive damp/heat aging
treatments which simulate 20 years of standard outdoor operating time. In
general, the efficiency of alkali containing samples dropped 60% of its original
output after the aging treatment.
APT results specify that alkali segregate at the grain boundary in both aged and
non-aged alkali-containing samples. Additionally, aged alkali-containing samples
did not exhibit considerable change in alkali migration from grain boundaries when
compared to their corresponding unperturbed reference samples. Rather the
ingress of up to 1,55 at. % water in aged samples, as measured by H3O content
and detected at grain boundaries along with the alkalis with APT, seems to have
negatively influenced the performance of the device. Moreover, this behavior was
only observed in alkali containing aged samples since no water ingress was
detected in non-alkali aged samples. For this reason, it is proposed that the
presence of alkali may facilitate water migration into the absorber layer when it is
exposed to damp/heat environments.
In general, an extensive study on the influence of microstructure and elemental composition on important solar cell material properties to further improve output
efficiencies and stability of these materials, is greatly required if they are to be
implemented for real world applications in the near future. Successful
characterization of these materials by means of APT, could thus, provide insight
into important nanoscale phenomena that may have considerable impact on the
final solar cell performance. |
