Title: | Introducing functionality in 2D hybrid perovskites: Structure formation, optoelectronic properties, and stability | Authors: | DENIS, Paul-Henry | Advisors: | Vanderzande, Dirk Lutsen, Laurence |
Issue Date: | 2022 | Abstract: | Hybrid perovskites re-emerged in the 1990s as an attractive class of active
materials for different optoelectronics.1,2 Since 2009, perovskite solar cells have
known an unprecedented performance increase, starting from an initial value of
3.8% and reaching up until now a power conversion efficiency of 25.5%.3,4 Next
to their excellent optoelectronic properties, such as a tunable bandgap, high
absorption coefficient, long charge carrier diffusion lengths, and high charge
carrier mobilities,5 hybrid perovskites demonstrate simple solution processability
and the possibility of roll-to-roll printing towards commercialization.6
Nevertheless, before the commercialization of hybrid perovskite technology
becomes feasible and attractive, the poor intrinsic environmental stability related
to hybrid perovskites needs to be improved.
Therefore, the main objective of this thesis was to overcome these stability issues
by designing hybrid perovskites with reduced dimensionality, that is, 2D layered
and quasi-2D hybrid perovskites. By introducing functionality in the organic layer,
we endeavored to increase the durability of hybrid perovskites and to introduce
unique optoelectronic properties to the hybrid. In this way, we attempted to
broaden the scope of this material class with a particular focus on achieving
synergetic effects between the organic and inorganic components of the hybrid.
First, we intercalated different cyano-based acceptor molecules in the van der
Waals gap of a 2D layered hybrid perovskite containing a pyrene butylammonium
(Pyr-C4) derivative, (Pyr-C4)2PbI4. Hence, a follow-up study was made on
intercalated 2D layered hybrids containing the charge-transfer complexes
pyrene:1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB), and pyrene:7,7,8,8-
tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ),7 to further detail on the optical properties and thermal stability of intercalated 2D hybrid perovskites. The series of cyano-based
acceptors included, were 1,4-dicyanobenzene (pDCNB), 1,3,5-tricyanobenzene
(T3CNB), and 11,11,12,12-tetracyano-9,10-anthraquinodimethane (TCAQ).
Based on our experimental results, the 1:1 donor-acceptor combinations revealed
no establishment of a charge-transfer band, as opposed to the strong chargetransfer complexes pyrene:TCNB and pyrene:TCNQ. However, it appeared that
intercalation still occurs through weak quadrupole-quadrupole (electrostatic)
interactions between the aromatic molecules, based on optical and structural
property changes. It was shown that the donor-acceptor binding energy and
molecular geometry (planarity and bulkiness) play an essential role in the
intercalation/deintercalation process, dictating the stability of the intercalated
hybrid against thermal stress. The intercalation of a strong and planar acceptor
increased the D:A binding energy, enhancing the hybrid's thermal stability. In
contrast, the acceptor molecular bulkiness decreases the thermal stability by
introducing strain in the perovskite framework. Incorporating a strong acceptor
(TCNB and TCNQ) through a charge-transfer interaction dramatically alters the
excitonic properties of the 2D layered perovskite. However, the incorporation of
acceptor molecules through weaker quadrupole-quadrupole interactions (pDCNB,
T3CNB, TCAQ) slightly modifies the excitonic behavior of the hybrid due to
octahedral distortion of the inorganic framework.
Although 2D layered hybrid perovskites have been widely studied, the
fundamental design rules of their formation are still incomplete. Consequently, we
decided to investigate the influence of the inorganic framework on the selfassembly of a functional organic ammonium cation.8 More specifically, we studied
the control of the inorganic framework's nature on the organic layer self-assembly
by halide substitution, ascertaining the importance of the space supplied by the inorganic framework in which the organic ammonium cation can reside. A series
of 2D layered hybrid perovskites (Bit-C3)2PbX4 (with X = Cl, Br, and I) containing
a 2,2′-bithiophene chromophore functionalized with a propylammonium tethering
chain as a model molecule was synthesized. The formation of lower-dimensional
hybrids was identified for the iodide-based hybrid perovskite in thin film and
single-crystals. Via halide substitution from iodide to bromide and chloride, it was
shown that the molecular degrees of freedom of the Bit-C3 ammonium cations
could be reduced by the spatial confinement of a smaller inorganic framework. In
this way, the formation of lower-dimensional hybrids can be hindered.
Additionally, it was illustrated that the 2D hybrid thermal stability depends on the
type of lead(II) halide framework employed. This stability decreases when the
organic ammonium cations are self-assembled within a more confined space.
Overall, this study shows the importance of efficiently utilizing the area supplied
by the inorganic framework in which the organic ammonium cations can reside
within a 2D hybrid perovskite. Given the many possible functional organic
ammonium cations that can be synthesized, we have shown a new design rule to
synthesize novel functional 2D layered perovskites successfully.
Owing to the volatility of the small organic cations (methylammonium and
formamidinium) in 3D hybrid perovskites,9–11 researchers focused on the nonvolatile small inorganic cesium cation to enhance the durability of 3D hybrid
perovskites.12–14 Unfortunately, the cesium lead(II) iodide black phase, which is
photoactive, is metastable in ambient conditions.15,16 To improve its phase
stability, we prepared a quasi-2D hybrid perovskite containing a polyheterocyclic
aromatic benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene (BTBT) cation with nominal chemical
formula (BTBT)2CsPb2I7. Via intrinsic thermal and moisture stability tests, it was
shown that the introduction of a functional BTBT cation dramatically enhances the stability of the cesium lead(II) iodide black phase with respect to the simple stateof-the-art aliphatic butylammonium cation. Moreover, incorporating a functional
BTBT cation rendered a slight improvement in the photoconductive properties of
the hybrid. Concomitant, the photoconductor-type detector based on
(BTBT)2CsPb2I7 yielded an improved photocurrent, transient photoresponse, and
specific detectivity as compared to the (BA)2CsPb2I7-based detector. Therefore,
we have demonstrated the benefit of employing a large functional organic cation
in quasi-2D hybrid perovskites for stable and efficient optoelectronics.
The synthesis of 2D layered hybrid perovskite single-crystals is of particular
importance for the characterization of their intrinsic properties and the elucidation
of their crystal structure. Therefore, we briefly summarized the existing solutionbased crystal growth methods to date17 and discussed the critical parameters
(solvent, temperature, and precursor concentration) that can influence the
perovskite crystal growth. We applied several crystal growth methods to
synthesize 2D hybrid perovskite single crystals based on oligothiophenes (2,2’-
bithiophene, Bit-C3; 2,2’:5’,2’’-terthiophene, Tert-C3) and benzothieno[3,2-
b]benzothiophene. We found that the crystallization behavior from solution to
yield single-crystals differs considerably from the one observed from spin-coating
into thin films. It was shown that the anti-solvent vapor-assisted (AVC) approach
is the most feasible method to grow functional 2D layered hybrid perovskite
single-crystals. Additionally, we presented a slightly modified AVC approach for
crystal growth, named 'thin film-assisted templated crystal growth.'
Overall, the fundamental knowledge gained from this thesis will undoubtedly be
of value towards the design and the synthesis of efficient and stable novel
perovskite materials for emerging optoelectronic applications. |
