Abstract: An intermediate multilayer structure, based on refractory metals and silver, is used to improve the adhesion of CVD diamond to steel substrates. The diffusion process and recrystallization of the multilayer structure during the diamond deposition and a further thermal annealing are studied by means of secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The stress in the diamond film is investigated by Raman analysis and the adhesion of diamond films to the substrate is examined by indentation tests.
