Abstract: A general method is described for the preparation of an oxalate precursor for the synthesis of PbTiO3. The total concentrations are given from which a precursor with the correct 1:1 ratio for Pb:Ti is obtained. The thermal behavior of the oxalate precursor in different atmospheres is investigated employing DSC and TGA coupled with FTIR, IR and XRD. Two main differences are found when the precursor is heated in N2 instead of O2. Firstly the amount of CO or CO2 released around 500-600-degrees-C is much greater in a N2 atmosphere, secondly besides PbTiO3 also Pb and PbTi3O7 are formed when heated in N2.
