Abstract: We have polymerized alpha-chloro-alpha'-alkyl(aryl)sulfinyl- and alpha-chloro-alpha'-alkyl(aryl)sulfonyl-p-xylenes according to a general route adopted from the Wessling bissulfonium salt route. If the polarizer is a sulfinyl group, the polymer, which is soluble in organic solvents, can be converted to trans-PPV. On the other hand, if the polarizer is a sulfonyl group the result is a polymer with a rather high thermal stability.
