Title: | Quantifying and removing structural defects in conjugated polymer semiconductors: influence on material and device properties | Authors: | VANDERSPIKKEN, Jochen | Advisors: | Maes, Wouter Vandewal, Koen Lutsen, Laurence |
materiaaleigenschappen toegelicht in Hoofdstuk 2.
halfgeleidermaterialen in (smalle-band) organische fotodetectoren (OPD’s), zowel
sterk gehomokoppelde PBTTT-(OR)2.
With carbon as the most abundant element in organic semiconductors, endless tunability of both their structure and properties is possible. This structural versatility or organic molecules is an important asset and allows for a large variety of chemical structures through various chemical pathways, as cleverly and abundantly used by Nature. Even though the level of control over the chemistry is extensive, the target compounds are rarely solely obtained and purification to remove side products is a crucial part of the synthesis (of organic semiconductors). While full employability of common purification techniques is possible in small molecule synthesis, conjugated polymer synthesis does not allow facile purification and the resulting material is more of a structural black box. The synthesis of (alternating) conjugated polymers commonly results in a fraction of homocoupled polymer species deviating from the anticipated chemical structure. Nevertheless, obtaining a reproducible polymer structure is crucial to obtain a material with constant device performance for both industrial application and fundamental research. In Chapter 1, the synthesis and employability of semiconducting polymers are outlined and it is shown how their interesting features arise from their chemical structure. Both the optoelectronic and morphological properties displayed by this class of materials are introduced and, most importantly, the impact of the variability in structure, molecular weight and impurities is framed. As material characterization is key, the employed experimental techniques allowing deeper understanding of conjugated polymers, from the molecular scale to bulk material properties, are outlined in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, the application of organic semiconducting materials in (narrowband) organic photodetectors (OPDs) is reviewed both from a physical and material perspective. Proof-of-concept demonstration of wavelength-selective organic OPDs is reported and their operating principle of converting a photon flux into an electrical signal with or without photoconductive gain is explained. An overview of the material or device/physics approaches to obtain wavelengthselective OPDs is given. The used classes of materials (and their design parameters) are discussed, along with the key figures of merit of photodetectors and a literature comparison thereof. In Chapter 4, variations of the well-known PBTTT donor polymer, PBTTT-OR-R and PBTTT-(OR)2, are synthesized to red-shift the charge transfer (CT) absorption of the polymer:PC61BM blends. More precisely, the alkyl side chains of PBTTT are modified, replacing one or both of them with an alkoxy side chain. It is shown that the unique PBTTT:fullerene intercalation features are (mostly) retained in the PBTTT-OR-R material. This intercalating nature is of great importance, as it maximizes the interfacial area between donor and acceptor material, and thus the CT absorption strength. This is exploited to extend the detection range of narrowband resonant cavity OPDs with a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 30-38 nm to wavelengths between 840 and 1340 nm, yielding specific detectivities in the range of 5 × 1011 to 1.75 × 1010 Jones. The broad wavelength tuning range achieved using a single polymer:fullerene blend renders this system an ideal candidate for miniature NIR spectrophotometers. The impact of chemical homocoupling defects, from the molecular to the device scale, in the polymeric structure of organic semiconductors is investigated indepth in Chapter 5. First, an (oxidative) approach to synthesize PBTTT-(OR)2 without homocoupling defects is illustrated and the comparison to a Stille copolymerization is made. The structures of both approaches are examined using high resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and compared to insights obtained from matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization - time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS). While the correct structure is affirmed by STM for the oxidative approach, homocoupling defects are identified and univocally quantified for the Stille polymer. Subsequently, the morphological impact of these defects and the lack thereof in both pure polymers and in mixtures with PC61BM are studied in detail. Using a combination of rapid heat-cool calorimetry and temperature-resolved X-ray diffraction, the morphological transitions are studied in situ. It is shown that the presence of homocoupling hinders fullerene intercalation and therefore has a profound impact on the morphology of the blend. Finally, it is observed that the resulting CT absorption diminishes in the defectcontaining polymer:PC61BM blend as the mixing of both components is less intimate due to the absence of fullerene intercalation. Chapter 6 further applies the oxidative homopolymerization approach to PBTTT and PBTTT-OR-R and a full comparison with PBTTT-(OR)2 is made. The relative presence of defects in the Stille approach is studied via MALDI-ToF MS and compared to mass spectra obtained for the oxidative approach. An in-depth study using temperature-resolved X-ray diffraction, both for the pure polymers and mixtures with PC61BM, is made and shows that at the theoretical fully intercalating molar ratio (around 45:55 w/w%) between polymer and PC61BM, no free polymer or fullerene is present. The enthalpic and entropic contributions to the phase transitions are studied in detail. While the homocoupling-free PBTTT derivatives display distinct different transitions as neat materials, they behave very similar once mixed with PC61BM. We in general elaborated once again on the importance of obtaining the correct chemical structure through the use of the homopolymerization approach and demonstrate the impact of homocoupling defects. The final chapter, Chapter 7, delves deeper into MALDI-ToF MS analysis of conjugated polymers and compares the low homocoupling containing Stille synthesized PBTTT and the high-homocoupling-containing PBTTT-(OR)2 polymers. Multi-range and multi-spectrum analysis in combination with molecular weight fractionation using recycling/preparative gel permeation chromatography is showcased. The importance of thorough analysis and cross-correlation with other characterization techniques is stipulated. To get further insights on the occurrence of homocoupling in PBTTT-(OR)2, a model reaction is investigated and the structures of the resulting products are identified using NMR. The obtained insights are critically compared to the analysis based on MALDI-ToF MS. As a final part, a set of guidelines was compiled to extract relevant data from MALDI-ToF MS analysis of conjugated polymers. Lastly, two appendices with uncoupled and/or ongoing research efforts are added. In appendix A, a large portion of synthetic work is displayed which had the main goal to obtain high-highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) materials to be used in combination with suitable non-fullerene acceptors to yield low energy charge transfer absorption. Appendix B delves deeper into the presence of metal impurities in conjugated polymers. It is concluded that their rather large presence requires a deeper investigation into both the origin and the impact on the properties of the polymers and their applications. |
