Abstract: The development of non-conventional structural solutions combining steel profiles with reinforced concrete requires an efficient control of the various load transfer mechanisms that can be activated between steel and concrete at local level, like chemical bond, mechanical bond, friction or mechanical interaction enhanced by the presence of ribs, plates or headed studs. This chapter summarizes and illustrates the current knowledge available regarding possible transfer mechanisms. Situations like local load introduction, transfer of longitudinal shear or activation of local “strut and tie” mechanisms that may have to be faced in the design practice are specifically discussed.
