This research explores the management of mangroves as carbon reservoirs in the context of Cuba’s climate change mitigation policies. The primary objective is to develop an integrated methodological framework based on the socio-ecological dynamics of the mangroves in Eastern Cuba which is mainly aimed at advancing the implementation of carbon sequestration measures. The study presents an evaluation of Cuba’s climate change policies and its legaladministrative framework and focusses on how these facilitate integrated mangrove management from a carbon sequestration perspective. Additionally, this thesis identifies the most effective techniques for detecting and identifying mangrove peat wood, highlighting its application in studying below-ground carbon pools in Cuba. A socio-ecological model of mangroves as carbon reservoirs, using the Driving Forces, Pressure, State, Impact, and Response (DPSIR) framework, was applied in four locations in Eastern Cuba to examine the socio-ecological relationships specific to each site. Ten critical nodes for implementing mangrove carbon sequestration initiatives and climate change policies were identified. Finally, recommendations are provided to improve the management of mangroves as carbon reservoirs in Cuba.-
