Abstract: This study explores walkability in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, focusing on creating a child-friendly walking environment to support children's physical well-being. It assesses both objective walkability linked to the built environment and safety, and subjective walkability, based on the perceptions of children (ages 10-18) and their parents. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study surveyed 381 child-parent pairs to capture their walking experiences in the downtown area, complemented by field observations of 88 commonly used walking routes. Results show that children consistently rate walkability lower than their parents and below objective assessments. This gap stems largely from walking spaces not designed to meet children's needs. Overall, downtown Ho Chi Minh City's walkability is average or below. Key findings highlight convenience and conviviality as areas needing improvement, offering city authorities valuable guidance for enhancing walkability for children and the wider community.
