Abstract: In this paper we present a usability study on object selection in a non-immersive virtual environment for urban planning. The tabletop setup, designed to improve spatial awareness in virtual environments, offers two complementary views on the virtual city and permits a hybrid 2D/3D selection technique. In a formal usability test, we compared this novel object selection technique with the ray cast selection technique.
