Issue Date: | 2025 | Source: | p. 200 -218 | Abstract: | This paper examines the integration of practice-based knowledge from vernacular architectural heritage management to improve architectural education in Tanzania. Vernacular architecture exemplifies cultural diversity and harmonious adaptation to the environment, offering valuable lessons in sustainable and culturally relevant design. Despite its significance and relevance, architecture curriculum often underrepresented vernacular heritage, raising concerns about its preservation amid modernization and globalization. This study examines how practical knowledge from vernacular architectural heritage management, particularly at the Makumbusho Open-Air Museum in Tanzania, can enrich undergraduate architecture programs. A case study approach was utilized, involving an analysis of ongoing construction practices at Makumbusho, a review of curricula from three Tanzanian universities, and feedback from managers, artisans, lecturers, students, and practicing architects. The findings indicate that incorporating immersive learning experiences, such as hands-on training and collaborations with open-air museums, significantly enhances students' technical skills and appreciation for vernacular architecture. Additionally, exposure to this topic inspires innovative design approaches that blend traditional methods with contemporary practices, resulting in culturally rich and environmentally sustainable solutions. This research underscores the importance of curriculum revisions that embed vernacular architecture practices, equipping future architects to safeguard cultural heritage while addressing modern design requirements. It advocates for broader adoption of experiential learning methods and further research to strengthen architectural education in diverse cultural contexts. | Document URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/1942/49060 | ISBN: | 9789987010110 | Category: | C1 | Type: | Proceedings Paper |
