This paper discusses the afterlife of three Expo 58 fragments in the village of Bunde, the Netherlands, through acquisition, transformation, and adaptation by discussing them as a series of metacultural operations for dealing with reused architectural fragments. These fragments—a pavilion, a series of glass-in-concrete windows, and a wooden piling—evolved from representing national innovation to embodying social and civic life of a modernising village in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Multiple approaches demonstrate how these fragments transcend passive existence through interpretation, revaluation, and continuous use. As a central part of Bunde’s postwar expansion, both physically and metaphorically, the active nature of these fragments and their occupants offers an inspiring reference for examining material reuse as a generative cultural practice. Initially motivated by economics or pragmatism, they evolved into a multilayered ensemble that constructively built modern community life, maintaining their own meaning and relevance through continuous use and adaptation. This paper contributes to local identity and valuemaking by indicating that meaning is not fixed during or after reuse but is shaped by those who (inter)act with it.-
