The concentration of different oxygen-containing groups (-OH, COOH, Ar---O---Ar, Ar---O---CH3, R---O---R) in two different coal types (a brown coal and a flame coal) are described by combined use of quantitative 13C CP/MAS n.m.r. spectroscopy and several labelling reactions (acetylation, silylation, methylation). The effect of trimethylsilyl ether formation on relaxation times was also examined.-
