Abstract: By analyzing the distribution of publications as a function of received citations, a relation was found between the deciles of this distribution and the number of citations. This relation suggests a model analogous to Beer's Law in physics on the absorption of Light in a homogenous layer of absorbing material. The results show a remarkable constancy over time. A description of this new model and its consequences on citation behaviour are presented in this paper.
