Abstract: An overview is presented of the life and work of Claude Shannon, who died begin 2001. Shannon is a pioneer in many fields of science. He introduced Boolean algebra in switching theory, is the founding father of communications science, and performed several experiments related to artificial intelligence. In this paper the relation between his work and the information sciences is stressed, describing, among other things, his use of n-grams.
