The body is often a strange and sometimes even annoying guest in psychotherapy. In this present article we try to point out why this does not have to be the case and the body may instead be welcomed in therapy. Firstly the body has its intricacies with historical developments in clinical psychology and psychotherapy. Secondly the body offers an intriguing entry point to what is known in phenomenology as ‘embodiment’ or as ‘the lived body’. This relationship between the body at one hand and nonverbal, limbic and implicit memory at the other hand is recently getting more ground from brain research. In addition, this connection has always been a pivotal element in body psychotherapy and somatic psychology where body awareness is a central feature when working with touch, movement, posture, breathing and evocative language. Although the effectiveness of body psychotherapy in psychosomatic dysfunctioning, trauma and alexithymia has been shown, rigorous and systematic outcome research is still lacking. Finally it should be emphasized that body psychotherapy can only be practiced after sound training and throughout a solid ethical frame.-
