Abstract: A first-year course has been developed for the joint program of the Faculty of Engineering Technology of KU Leuven and Hasselt University. This course should motivate freshmen for a further study of engineering in general and should spur interest in electrical and computer engineering in particular. The philosophy is that hands-on laboratory and experiences build student confidence, stimulate curiosity, and demonstrate the relevance of electrical engineering. The practical experiments are supported by traditional lectures in combination with other learning methods. Further, a variety of formative and summative evaluation methods are used. This paper describes the structure of the new course.
