Issue Date: | 2019 | Abstract: | In order to transform diamond from a gemstone to a relevant
photoelectrochemical material, understanding and controlling the surface
chemistry plays a crucial role. Diamond is generally considered to be a very inert
material that is difficult to functionalize. However, after three decades of
research on its surface chemistry, a multitude of innovative methods have been
developed to alter the diamond surface composition and to attach functional
(macro)molecules.1 The hydrogen surface groups on as-grown chemical vapor
deposition diamond are readily exchanged for oxygen, nitrogen and even
halogen atoms, drastically altering the surface properties. Depending on the
treatment protocol or the applied potential during electrochemical oxidation, the
ratio of alcohol, carbonyl and ether species can be controlled.2-3 In most cases,
OH-termination is desired as this enables straightforward further
functionalization via silanization, esterification or thermal alkylation. Similarly,
for nitrogen-terminated surfaces a high amount of primary amine groups is
targeted toward subsequent amidation reactions, which can be achieved by
controlled plasma treatments.4 On the other hand, H-terminated surfaces have
also been employed to covalently attach small (linker) molecules via stable and
robust carbon-carbon bonds. This, however, remains limited to two well-known approaches, i.e. diazonium and photochemical grafting. Functionalization of
diamond with molecules bearing reactive moieties via diazonium or
photochemical grafting enabled the exploration of numerous chemical reactions
on diamond. In this way, complex light-harvesting small molecule chromophores
have been immobilized on the diamond surface toward the development of ptype dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCCs). Very important here is a good energy
level alignment between the dye molecules and both the valence band of
diamond and the reduction potential of the redox electrolyte. Hence, the surface
has been decorated with various metal-complex, donor-acceptor and less
conventional dyes such as polyoxometalates and biological reaction centers.
Moreover, the photoelectrochemical properties of diamond have been harnessed
for the creation of solvated electrons, which are extremely potent reduction
reagents that allow for the synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and the
reduction of carbon dioxide.5-7 In this thesis, some contributions were made to
the development of “all-carbon” p-type DSSCs through the investigation of novel
types of diamond surface chemistry on the one hand, and the synthesis of
complex light-harvesting organic molecules on the other hand.
At first instance, H-terminated nanocrystalline boron-doped diamond (B:NCD)
films were functionalized with a layer of iodophenyl molecules via the
electrochemical diazonium grafting of in situ diazotized 4-iodoaniline. To the
best of our knowledge, this is the first report wherein iodine functionalities are
introduced on diamond. The resulting iodophenyl groups undergo rapid oxidative
addition with Pd complexes, which allows for further functionalization via Pdcatalyzed cross-coupling reactions. A commonly employed reaction in solutionbased chemistry is the Stille cross-coupling. Due to its broad applicability, high
selectivity and excellent yields, this reaction was initially selected for the
construction of fully conjugated systems on our diamond platform. However, a
systematic study involving different catalyst systems revealed that the
transmetallation became problematic by the application of bulky ligands such as P(o-tolyl)3, XPhos or SPhos in a reaction with stannylated thiophenes. In
combination with the mediocre stability of the employed organostannyl
derivatives, large amounts of surface contamination with Sn and Pd were
observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, even after
thorough rinsing. Since surface impurities potentially lead to charge trapping, an
alternative reaction, the Sonogashira cross-coupling, was investigated. Herein,
more stable alkyne derivatives are employed. In this manner the surface
coverage was optimized to 2.0 at.% S, while the concentrations of any
contaminants remained well below 0.5 at.%.
In a subsequent study a dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole
push-pull organic chromophore was synthesized. This molecule consists of an
electron rich (dithienopyrrole) and electron deficient (benzothiadiazole) building
block, which affords a maximum absorption at 474 nm with a molar extinction
coefficient of 18 600 M-1 cm-1
. After introduction of an alkyne functionality, the
push-pull chromophore was immobilized on boron-doped diamond via the
previously devised two-step functionalization strategy, i.e. diazonium grafting
and Sonogashira cross-coupling. By employing a Pd scavenger, sodium
diethyldithiocarbamate, the surface contamination was minimized to ca. 0.1
at.%, whereas optimization of the reaction conditions resulted in a S
concentration of 2.3 at.%. This system afforded photocurrent densities of 450
nA cm-2 under white light illumination (0.9 sun) in a methyl viologen electrolyte
solution and upon applying an external bias of -0.2 V. The same chromophore
was also immobilized on diamond via a combination of diazonium grafting of in
situ diazotized 4-azidoaniline and Cu(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition
(CuAAC). The surface functionalization via CuAAC chemistry was slightly more
efficient and a S coverage of 2.5 at.% was obtained. However, the resulting
photocurrents were approximately three times lower (140 nA cm-2 at -0.2 V)
than observed for the Sonogashira cross-coupling. Similarly, the photovoltages
for systems functionalized via Sonogashira cross-coupling were three times bulky trimethylsilyl
protecting group, was synthesized and grafted onto the surface. Although no
height profiles could be obtained from atomic force microscopy due to the high
roughness of the B:NCD samples, monolayer formation was confirmed by
angular resolved XPS measurements. The density of the grafted layer is
determined by the size of the protective trimethylsilyl group and not the
aromatic system, which results in a less dense layer in comparison with less
sterically demanding diazonium salts. After deprotection of the trimethylsilyl
groups, the resulting alkynes could be employed to immobilize various push-pull
type chromophores. In addition to the previously employed dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-
d]pyrrole-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, two novel chromophores were synthesized,
i.e. dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4-carbaldehyde and
dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4-dicyanovinyl). All three
chromophores were functionalized with an iodine group and successfully
immobilized on the B:NCD surface without major surface contamination.
Nevertheless, during photoelectrochemical measurements, unexpected
recombination characteristics were observed in all cases, which were attributed
to electron transfer from the methyl viologen redox couple back to the diamond
electrode after excitation of the chromophores. This pathway is unique to the
monolayer functionalization approach and is likely due to the presence of the
previously mentioned gaps in the initially grafted layer of ethynylphenyl
molecules. In the final chapter (appendix), a novel series of push-pull chromophores was
synthesized. The donor part comprised an oligothiophene unit, which was built
up out of 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 conjugated thiophene molecules that were linked via the
2-position. As acceptor unit, the electron deficient perylene diimide was
employed. We envisaged that by increasing the length of the oligothiophene
donor, the surface coverage could be increased since the bulky perylene
diimides should be located further from the surface. In contrast to what was
expected, XPS analysis indicated a decrease of the surface coverage for the
larger chromophores. On the other hand, increasing the length of the
oligothiophene chain resulted in an increase of the molar extinction coefficient to
a value of 68 000 M-1 cm-1 for 8T-PDI, which should improve light absorption
and the resulting photocurrents. Unfortunately, the same issue of charge
recombination was encountered due to the low density of the diazonium-grafted
layer and no comparison of the photocurrents could be made. |
